Lindy Hop: The couple’s dance known as the guardian of all swing dances

The couple’s dance also known as Lindy was originated in early 20th Century evolved usually as a Charleston Dance and various others forms of dancing. Also known as the original swing dance, the Lindy Hop is also considered as it was improvised by its dancers in order to make this dance form more energetic, playful and fun to perform in the dance floor.

Characteristics of Lindy Hop
This is an athletic and sporty dance form in which dancers perform and maintain athletic and active stance in spite of dancing in elegant and upright posture. The dancers keep their legs in constant position. The two basic dance styles of Lindy Hop are Savoy and GI. The long and horizontal lines signify
Savoy style while GI is danced with additional, upright position. Although look is the motive in these dance styles, the dancers of the Lindy Hop bring their own personalized styles in the dance floor. The elegant and energetic dance style can be spontaneous and wild. In short, this dance style is fully packed with very smooth, supple and calm moves and frenzied kicks.

History of Lindy Hop
Since this is based popularly on Charleston Dance, Lindy Hop is developed basically as African-American dance style. The Lindy Hop dance style is basically formed in the streets of Harlem because it got its official name from the flight of Charles Lindberg were flying to Paris in 1927 when he was reading a newspaper of headline – “Lindy Hops the Atlantic”. However, there is no place of “hop” in its dance steps despite of its name “Lindy Hop”. In fact, this dance is very smooth and solid with no chance of bopping, hopping or prancing for the dancers. The Lindy Hop is considered to be inspired from several other steps of western dances such as Shag, Boogie Woogie, East Coast Swing and Balboa.

Action and steps in Lindy Hop
Swingout is the move defining of the Lindy Hop. In this movement swingout, one partner has to pull other from open position to close at the angle of 180 Degree. Afterwards, he swings her back in the original position of the beginning. Although it contains acrobatic moves, most steps are those that are precise, smooth and perfectly synced extremely as per the rhythms of music.

When it comes to the use of steps, there are lots of trendy footwork used by the dancers borrowed from Tap dancing and Charleston. The followers of Lindy Hop mix the footwork with changing of weight and every step is borrowed from the leaders. There are 6 to 8-count steps added to the Lindy Hop dance style. The “shine steps” are also performed by the dancers in which dancers “shine” on the dance floor. By including fun steps on this dance form such as Suzi Q’s, Truckin’s and Twists including some air-steps, the dancers often perform daring backflips.
